A "review" of Blood Diamond
Might be slightly biased (?) by the writer of the book Blood Diamonds (yes with a "s") I don't believe the film is based on that book but it touches on the same subject matter: On different note entirely, I checked out Blood Diamond—the Leonardo DiCaprio movie about how conflict diamonds fueled the civil war in Sierra Leone, the subject of my 2001 book Blood Diamonds, with an “s”—at a private screening in New York last week. A full review of the film and how well it treated its subject matter will be coming soon, but in the meantime I’ll at least hint that it’s well worth seeing when it opens Dec. 8. Definitely check it out before you buy your wife the diamond tennis bracelet that you were going to put into her stocking. http://www.fortcollinsweekly.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=358&Itemid=32

Thanks Lena.. This is Emanuel Levy's review: http://emanuellevy.com/article.php?articleID=3799

lena- 11-15-2006

thanks Ilaria - its kind of an odd review - no discussion on the performances at all. Also, Levy confirms what I dreaded when I heard it was a Zwick directed film - apparently melodramatic and preachy - oh dear.

Thanks for both reviews. The book is a good read - probably essential reading to understand the film is not fiction.

Hmmmm......it seems Kris Tapley, another pundit on the net, has seen Diamond and doesn't consider it a contender for much of anything. I think the film is going to be viewed as far too commercial for serious consideration. Hopefully it's worth seeing.

Leonardo interview and clips from BD never seen before http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=725&Itemid=99 http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=732&Itemid=99

Wow, after watching these clips, I can't believe this film hasn't gotten more good buzz about it. It honestly looks amazing. Everyone's performance is spot on and electric! And the whole feel is great, as if you're there. Could be Zwick's best work... Maybe people (critics, journalists, etc) just feel really antsy about what the film is talking about. Maybe that's why they haven't commited to promoting it? I don't know, but I'd be really surprised if this film turns out less than stellar, in my eyes at least. Thanks for the links, Courtney.

I guess it pays to live dangerously.
lena & Ilaria... Many THANKS for the links. ALL interesting to me. I read Greg Campbell's book several months ago & couldn't put it down. It's a fascinating read. 8) ArtReborn wrote: I don't know, but I'd be really surprised if this film turns out less than stellar, in my eyes at least. I completely agree. I'm really psyched for BD! And not so long now...ONLY 2 weeks!

BD Review and Clips
Thanks for the early review, lena and Ilaria I haven’t read Campbell’s book yet, but I’ve been told a lot about it. I intend to read it because of the background info it gives. But I very much doubt there’s anyone out there who will go to BD thinking that it’s fiction...not after all the publicity its getting courtesy of the Diamond Council and DeBeers. They’d hardly be this concerned if they thought anyone would view BD as fiction. And thanks for those amazing clips, Courtney Looks like a very powerful movie to me. Love the 3 main characters in BD. Everything about this movie looks fantastic to me. And imo, Leo’s accent is right on.....all the time. That can’t be an easy one to do. I’ve read comments from people who really know the SA accent who have had very good things to say about it.

I just noticed a blooper on the "The World Wants What We Have" clip. at the beginning of the clip (6/7 sec), dicaprio want to light his cigarette (that he has on the mouth) but in the next shot he drinks. + I found this Q&A with Leonardo DiCaprio http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1562640,00.html

Blood Diamond
Thanks for another review, peanut And yapi, thanks for the Q&A from Time. Very interesting. I enjoyed hearing about Leo's "old Hollywood" character influences ~ Q - Your character is a hard-boiled mercenary and diamond smuggler. I saw glimpses of Steve McQueen and even a bit of Gable in your portrayal. Was it my imagination, or did anything from long-ago Hollywood inform your character in this film? A - The Treasure of The Sierra Madre. I love that movie, wow. It really is a masterpiece. I think it's Bogart's best role. The Treasure of The Sierra Madre is one of my favorite Bogart films. Anyone here live in Detroit? There's an early screening of BD there on Dec 5 ~ Want to see a special advance screening of the Leonardo DiCaprio/Jennifer Connelly film "Blood Diamond" at a metro Detroit theater Dec. 5? The story's set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990s Sierra Leone and involves a quest to recover a rare pink diamond. It is rated R, so no entrants under age 17, please. To enter to win one of 50 passes for two, e-mail your name, postal address and daytime phone to thamovies@hotmail.com. You must type "Blood Diamond" in the subject field. We'll select the winners at random from all entries received and notify them in time for the show. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061124/ENT07/611240361 Maybe we’ll hear a few more early BD reviews soon.

Yapi As to "The World Wants"...noticed what you noticed....but...I also remembered that when we saw similar clips for "TD"..that when we saw the actual movie...we realized that those clips were snippets from a scene put together = the scene didn't actually play out like the clip So figured in that scene ...they took snippets of that total scene and pasted them together....leaving out transition parts... Thanks for Time interview link...I have subscription to Time so look forward to when my issue arrives this week :)

Abstract- 11-26-2006

thanks Courtney and Yapi.
