Ashecliffe wraps! Cast & crew set sail on 3 hour bender
Boston Herald - July 3, 2008 DiCaprio, crew cap ‘Ashecliffe’ shoot By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa Time has run out on Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s time in the Bay State filming “Ashecliffe,” the big-budget adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel noir “Shutter Island.” Yesterday, the cast and crew shot their final scenes in the North End, and tonight they’ve booked passage on the Spirit of Boston for their bon voyage booze cruise. And who could blame them? Scorsese’s movie mob has been kicking around these parts since oh-so-dreary February and began shooting the first week in March down at the oh-so-dreary Whittenton Mills in Taunton. The mills, BTW, were remade into a German concentration camp for the flick. So don’t expect a feel-good flick when this one hits theaters next year! As we’ve told you before, the set-in-the-’50s film is about a pair of U.S. marshals, played by Leo and Mark Ruffalo, who investigate the disappearance of a female patient from a hospital for the criminally insane located on a Massachusetts island. Cameras rolled yesterday at the Waterfront Cafe on Commercial Street and up on Henchman Street where a few actors were filmed playing stickball. DiCaprio, allegedly, was wrapping up scenes at creepy Medfield State Hospital, which stands in for the aforementioned insane asylum. But our spies caught him chowing at Cafeteria on Newbury Street at lunchtime. Hmmm. During the four-month shoot, the crew also hauled their cameras to Nahant, the Crane Estate, East Boston, a Hyde Park soundstage and other garden spots here in the commonwealth. Bonus points to anyone who catches the significance of the board's new background music.

Oh well I need extra points. We are on the Howard Hughes's over budget, endless movie 'Hell's Angels' that needed a complete re shoot for sound. Do hope this doesn't apply to SI! Hope everyone enjoys the party though, Hwyl!

Arnz The 'background music' is from the song 'Ain't Cha Glad" from "Aviator" .....because we're all GLAD the "SI" shoot finished on schedule :?: :?:

Gotta give the points to Shynney. It's "Yellow Dog Blues" from The Aviator, the wrap party music for Hell's Angels.

Are we having a party, then? Thanks, arnzilla :) Where does this shoot rank in terms of length among Scorsese films? One of the shorter ones?

Shynney- 07-04-2008

Thanks Arnzilla. Had such a busy week and am totally shattered but enjoyed the nostalgia of the red devils and the dripping ice plane that the music engendered. A favorite scene. Would have thought SI was one of the longer shoots Will, it seems to have been going on since February hasn't it? Imagine everyone must be pretty exhausted and in need of that party!

They started early March... so it's four months. Yes, maybe not that short, after all. Certainly, though, shorter than Gangs.

Are we having a party, then?Beware of these crashers when you party on July 4th: BTW, ya hear that the Boston Pops played "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" after the audience was told that Scorsese was in the crowd at the fireworks show last night? Where does this shoot rank in terms of length among Scorsese films?Just a rough estimate: GONY: 7 months (Nyaaaahhhhh!!!!!) Goodfellas: 5 months (I'm pretty sure IMDB underestimates by 2 months) The Departed: 5 months Cape Fear: 4 months Casino: 4 months Kundun: 4 months The Aviator: 4 months Shutter Island: 4 months AOI: 3 months BOTD: 3 months
