Gosh what a shame you can't download ALL of Scorsese interview...is 24" in all and chocked full of interesting info about how he shot the various scenes/ how he kept the actors in the necessary 'tense' state they needed to be / the themes of the movie/etc..
One thing he does mention is what you said long ago about how he shot the Nicholson/DiCaprio /I've got a rat showndown at the table
Did you get to the part where talked about opening scene we see in trailer ...or as he calls it the 'dragon scene' ?

Did you get to the part where talked about opening scene we see in trailer ...or as he calls it the 'dragon scene' ?I missed the dragon part. One of the last things I heard was about Jack sniffing at his glass and saying "I smell a rat." What did I say about that scene?
Yapi
Thanks so much for breakdown of Marty's interview !!!
Hope this helps Arnz to see ENTIRE interview...as it is chocked full of the kind of movie info he loves
Arnz
Let me go find your comments ...
Did you get to part on tape where he pronounces Costello's name differently ?
Then he goes back to pronouncing it the way we are used to hearing it as the interview progresses ..
arnzilla- 09-26-2006
Much obliged, yapi. Peanut, I didn't get to the name mispronunciation part yet.

Alas..I'm hopeless at finding things....maybe Will can find exact thread and post ......but long agooooooooooo you were discussing how they probably filmed the Costello/Costigan table scene and when Scorsese describes how he filmed that scene that is exactly how he did it....which is why the moment we both heard his comments we immediately thought of your past comments..
Hope with the breakdown you can see them all now !
Do let us know

I just watched part 2 and realize that Will was referring to the "what's the difference" shot as being the first time we see Costello's face in the light (I previously called it a Harry Lime-ish moment). The one you're referring to must be in part 3. I remember I said something about the halo effect for that table scene. But based on what Scorsese is saying about the way sexuality hovers over the film, I wouldn't be surprised if what I said about a woman being under that table turned out to be true. :P

Glad you got to see first two parts....
So you saw the part about Scorsese describing the first scene we see in trailer as 'dragon scene' because as Costello walks across the screen..the cigarette smoke flows out of his nose like smoke bellowing out of a dragon ??
And he also compared Costello to a serpent in ice cream scene with Lil Colin....as the serpent /devil coming into Garden of Innocence/Eden..
Also did you get to the part where he pronounces Costello's name but he puts the emphasis on the first syllable instead of 'low' sound at end ...and then as interview progresses he goes back to 'low' pronounciation..I guess the first is the Italian pronounciation of name...
And...yes....it is the part about how he filmed that scene...the two different cameras...one just filming Billy's reactions.....
And..yes...I do recall your comments about a woman under the table in that scene :)
Bottom line...hope you get to see all 3 discs

Thanks, yapi :)
Arnzilla,
hope you got to see the entire interview. Yes, I was referring to the "reveal" of Costello, the moment he says "what's the difference"... 8)
Also, I think the C-word might be of the rooster variety after all, since Scorsese mentions "pretty profane or obsene jokes are being made about sex and all this sort of thing, phalluses and all that sort of stuff".
And I don't know if Leela had a chance to see the clip yet, but Scorsese mentions a few films by Melville, one of them being "Le Doulos", that he also showed to Monahan.
Shynney- 09-26-2006
Noticed the reference to Melville too. I recently watched 'Le Doulos', those long slow scenes, fascinating but liked Le Circle Rouge better. So little seems to actually happen but there is so much atmostphere. Can see how they have influenced Scorsese though.

So you saw the part about Scorsese describing the first scene we see in trailer as 'dragon scene' because as Costello walks across the screen..the cigarette smoke flows out of his nose like smoke bellowing out of a dragon ??Yes, I recall seeing a stationary shot like that before, but not a moving one.
Also did you get to the part where he pronounces Costello's name but he puts the emphasis on the first syllable instead of 'low' sound at end ...and then as interview progresses he goes back to 'low' pronounciation..I guess the first is the Italian pronounciation of name...Costello as in below.
And I don't know if Leela had a chance to see the clip yet, but Scorsese mentions a few films by Melville, one of them being "Le Doulos", that he also showed to Monahan. The other was Le Samourai which has a memorable Italian title according to IMDb: "Frank Costello, faccia d'angelo"

Leela and I both saw Melville's "Le Samourai ( our favorite for sure )..as well as...Bob Le Flambeur...the lead character in Flambeur is very charismatic gangster who both the crimminals and the police enjoy being around...

Peanut thanks for the Melville tips. Will try and root out those two you mention. Certainly a unique film maker, a mix of the european and american but those long, long scenes are what fascinate me.

For sure to try to find "Le Samourai "....Alain Delon is breathtaking to say the least....the black and white images are wonderful ...especially Melville's trademark white gloves...and an ending that truly stays with you... :)
