Daniel Day-Lewis on Scorsese An article on Daniel Day-Lewis
NY Times magazine
And yet, there were those he yearned to work with. Day-Lewis met Martin Scorsese when the director was planning to direct “Schindler’s List.”
“I thought that would be something very interesting to do,” Day-Lewis said, as he poured a cup of tea for me. “But then the project went to Spielberg.
When I met Martin at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, I wanted to pick him up and cuddle him. He is a mighty man, and when he asks you to do something, you want to do it. I was struggling to escape from English drawing rooms, but because of Martin, I accepted the role in ‘The Age of Innocence.’ ”
I hadn't known Marty was considering doing Schindler's List.

Yes, he swapped directorial duties wif spielberg who was going to do cape fear, obviously cause it was spielberg's pet project, and spielberg thought he wasnt ready for it.
As much as I liked Schindler's List, this article got me a little angry at the prospect that Scorsese may have directed with Day-Lewis as either Goeth or Schindler. I say angry, cause I know Scorsese/Day-Lewis would've provided an even more gripping portrayal of Schindler's life story--perhaps a more critical view of Schindlers philandering etc, and I would imagine he wouldve made the ghetto scenes almost unbearable to watch (violence wise). Not that Spielberg made them any but; but he did make them more accessible--i know scorsese would've made them almost unwatchable (but realistic). Also, I always hated that ending when Liam Neeson is bemoaning how he couldn've done more. Seemed too much like a Spielberg moment in an otherwise dark, depressing, but terrific film.
Anyways, here's hoping like everyone else on thsi board that Day Lewis being in Silence is not just a rumor, but a reality.
Out of curiosity, what do other people think Scorsese's Schindler's List would've been like?

I believe Zaillian bulked up the character of Goeth under Scorsese's auspices, so his influence might still be there. The cinematography also reminded me of Raging Bull, except the style of the public and private were flipped. Schindler's had a documentary-like feel for its public scenes and expressionistic for the private, while Raging Bull was the opposite.
Perhaps under another director, the gas chambers would actually be gas chambers. :?

what do other people think Scorsese's Schindler's List would've been like? fascinating to imagine how he would have tackled it. Like you, I found the ending a bit much... but then I didn't think much of the ending of TD either :? :?
I think SL is the best thing Spielberg... and Liam Neeson... have done, so would be hard to improve on it. And I loved Ralph Fiennes as Goeth so I can't imagine Day-Lewis or anyone else in that role. Day-Lewis as Schindler? Now that would have been interesting :) :)

there were moments in Schindler's lists that will remain... done under the Spielberg's hand indeed... but great moments... Spielberg is not expected to represents violence like Scorsese can do it... I find that comparing "quality" in those moment is pretty... "akward"... The shooting scene, Ralph Fiennes shooting a woman, just after getting up, after a hangover, from bed was enough speaking... and not only cinematografically... You got it as Fiennes does.. in the stomach... but for you, it's a kill... Spielberg did it like a kill...
