Harry Knowles loves which movie? After an initial bad review when GONY was theatrically released, Harry wrote the following after re-watching the Blu-ray Disc:
It’s strange, for some reason in memory – I remember being disappointed by GANGS OF NEW YORK, but rewatching it – all I can do is love the film. I love the look and feel of the movie. I like that essentially it is just a revenge story. And oddly – in light of THE DEPARTED the film feels like a book end for this movie. I know they’re different cities, that this one has little to nothing to do with cops – but everything to do with the gangs… and really – the cops just later became the legitimate gang. But I love and have always loved Daniel Day-Lewis’s Bill The Butcher. And I’ve come to love Amserdam Vallon as played by DiCaprio. Scorsese does some very nice work here. There isn’t really any additional content from the regular DVD – all you get is VISUAL PERFECTION. Awwww…
This reminds me of what the NY Times' AO Scott wrote in his 2002 review:
''Gangs of New York'' is nearly a great movie. I suspect that, over time, it will make up the distance.

He he... Never too late... GONY is such a HUGE piece of cake !
I've noticed the same here (here=belgian/french press-media).. different reviews, through years - comparing them when the film open, and then when it was for instance on TV recently... Critics have digested or probably have re-seen the film with more attention than they did at the release... less buzz, less pressure, less stress, less subjective/prospective opinions, just... calmly watch the WORK.
Thanks Arnzilla.
