Scorsese in Cannes this year...
I'm surprised there is no news posted about it here.. but in the french Internet media I read that Scorsese will give a masterclass during the next coming 60th Cannes Film Festival. (May 16-27) From FAP (french agency press) http://fr.news.yahoo.com/04042007/202/60e-festival-de-cannes-martin-scorsese-donnera-une-lecon-de.html It says : Scorsese will give the Camero D'Or Award (award given to the First Directing) and also will give a Master Class as Stephen Frears, Nanni Moretti, Wong Kar Wai et Sydney Pollack did before, and also launch his "World cinema foundation", dedicated to the preservation of world cinema treasures. ok : There's a confirmation on the O site (in english !) : http://www.festival-cannes.org/index.php?langue=6002 Another good reason to watch the festival TV/web mags this year !

Thanks, Lou! Is anyone going? Scorsese will also be selling the Rolling Stones documentary at Cannes. Maybe he'll bring some clips along. :)

Lou- 04-12-2007

As far as I'm concerned each year I watch the festival on TV, sorry WILL , day by day... I'll try to post if I find something interesting... even if it's in french ! :) But I'm sure we'll get almost "live" news with the Internet...

will- 04-19-2007

Howard Shore will also be at the festival, for a "Music Masterclass". :)

Shynney- 04-20-2007

With The 11th Hour and the Rolling Stones movie Cannes will be even more interesting this year. Just wish I could make it but finances are need for other things at the moment. Do hope there is a nice lot of coverage somewhere!

Lou- 04-20-2007

Thanks Will for the news about Shore... That makes... a musician + a director + an actor/producer .. =... a good festival for us ! Shynney : No worry, I'm broke too :D

Today, Scorsese announced the launching of the World Cinema Foundation. Here he is at Cannes: And with the other directors: Article: Scorsese launches foundation for international cinema in Cannes CANNES, France: Director Martin Scorsese announced a foundation to find and restore neglected treasures of world cinema during an appearance Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival. The Academy Award-winning director is backed up by an advisory board of prominent international directors, from Mexico's Guillermo Del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth") and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Babel") to China's Wong Kar-wai ("In the Mood For Love") to Britain's Stephen Frears ("The Queen.") Scorsese said it was a "dream come true" to launch his project at Cannes, where his "Taxi Driver" won the top prize in 1976. The idea stemmed from the work of The Film Foundation in the United States, which Scorsese founded in 1990 along with Woody Allen, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg. Though the U.S. foundation has saved many movies, 90 percent of American silent movies have been lost, as have half of all U.S. movies made before 1950, Scorsese said. "Things have changed, but it's almost impossible to catch up," Scorsese said. "So we thought over the past years it would be a wonderful thing to pull together the influence of directors around the world to work in their countries, to work on raising financing." Scorsese said that filmmakers have a "tenacity and obsession" for saving their favorite movies. The category of "neglected" films would cover a wide range, he said. "It could be famous films which are no longer shown in theaters and not available on video, and films that are certainly not as well known," he said. Already at Cannes, the foundation is presenting three restored films, from Morocco, Brazil and Romania. The goal is to get restored pictures from around the world more exposure, whether on DVD, in cinemas or on the Internet. "Preserving films is preserving cultural identity," said Brazil's Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries"), a board member. "We're talking here about preserving diversity and plurality, and the possibility to know one each other better." Other international directors on the advisory board include Germany's Fatih Akin ("Head On"), Mali's Souleymane Cisse ("Light"), Iran's Abbas Kiarostami ("A Taste of Cherry"), Italy's Ermanno Olmi ("The Tree of Wooden Clogs"), Cristi Puiu ("The Death of Mr. Lazarescu"), Abderrahmane Sissako ("Bamako"), Palestinian Elia Suleiman ("Divine Intervention"), France's Bertrand Tavernier ("Captain Conan") and Germany's Wim Wenders ("Wings of Desire"). Scorsese, fresh from his best-picture, best-director win at the Oscars for "The Departed," will have a busy week at Cannes. He is set to give a master class on moviemaking to students and film buffs on Thursday. At Sunday's closing ceremony, Scorsese will present a prize for the festival's best film by a first-time director.

Will : thanks... I just saw yesterday a short clip of Scorsese having fun with this year's Cannes president Stephen Frears and I was happy to saw them both relax, and chatting like old good pals... and no pressure on their shoulders this year... So far, I've not seen any interview of Scorsese on TV, but as I have doubt about our TV shows beeing still interested by Cinema and those who make it and support it, I'm not surprised. It's all about gossip and superficial matters (Ok, I stop, I may sound bitter, and I am in a way). I remember in 2000, 2001... Scorsese sent a letter to our "sentenced-to-death" cinematheque, here in Belgium, and it's still alive, his support helped us. He's doing this again with the foundation... BRAVO !

A report about Scorsese's masterclass: Scorsese shares film secrets at Cannes It's the story line in a movie that counts first and foremost, Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese told a crowd of wannabe film-makers at Cannes on Thursday. "It's the subject matter I'm attracted to and it always has been," Scorsese told a packed auditorium at his first Cannes Film Masterclass, attended by Quentin Tarantino and a host of other film types who fought to get seats. "We want to see the great man and catch something of his wisdom," budding producer Joshua Klar told AFP. Klar came along with Abe Lebovic, whose short movie, "Goyta" was selected for the festival's official competition for shorts. They had to leave early but said even some of Scorsese's fascinating insights "are better than nothing." They missed quite a lot. For well over an hour, Scorese talked in length about the wide palate of movies he directed in over 45 years in the business. He talked with Cannes film veteran Henri Behar in front of a huge screen on showing excerpts from key movies including "Mean Streets", "Raging Bull", "After Hours" and "The Departed". Speaking about why he shot boxing scenes in "Raging Bull" as if the viewer was in the ring, Scorsese said he had not known how to film a fight as he had never been to one. It was only after watching a boxing match that "I could see and hear the sound of punches," so he wanted spectators to get the same feel, he said. Shooting scenes of violence, part of his childhood in a tough New York neighbourhood, was easier: "I tend to do it the way I experienced seeing or being part of it as a grew up." Music and colour are the other elements that play key roles in his many movies. The well-known hit song "Baby you're the one" soars at a defining moment in "Casino" and it was the musical score of Scorsese's film "Kundun" about the Dalai Lama that designed the movie rather than the other way round, the director said. Comedy and sex are less common themes though Scorsese said he enjoyed making comedy while realising it was difficult. But sex, he said, was a great unknown. "I'm looking forward to shooting sex some day. I've a few ideas."

More from the discussion with ScorseseQ: You work with a lot of young actors. Do you feel that you have to educate your casts? Scorsese: All the time. For ``Departed'' I ran a film called ``Ashes and Diamonds'' for Leo DiCaprio. A character discovers life and then he gets killed. There's an extraordinary moment with a sheet and blood and sunglasses ? and then he falls in love with a waitress. It's such a beautiful film. And Leo was wiped out by it. Festival Circuit Q: Will you show the restored films to the public? Scorsese: They will always be premiered here in Cannes. That's what we're aiming for. And then there will be a festival circuit to show these films round the world. There should be a festival of restored films! Q: So many directors burst on the scene and then fade away. That's never happened to you. How do you keep your passion? Scorsese: I didn't get any sleep last night! The jet lag is killing me! You do get tired, but then there's curiosity. I just put a DVD in. I circle some titles that look interesting. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601088&sid=a15ASLOw326U&refer=muse
