Scream, Will, Courtney, and Stormy Thanks for posting news of the SAG awards, with 2 nominations here DiCaprio has to be a hot tip for Oscar nomination. :D Congrats also to The Departed and I hope that nom for the emsemble award will turn into a much deserved WIN  I'll be interesting to see how the film is regarded by the Bafta's the awards too a lot of knocks here last year for its failure to recognise and celebrate homegrown talent.

Mark Wahlberg won Best Supporting Actor at the National Film Society Critics Awards. :D Other than that, nothing for the Departed... Here's a report on the winners: http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/blog/2007/01/natl_society_of.html

Way to go, Mark!!!! Glad to see that one happen, I am. The NSFC is always just a bit off the wall but am surprised they went with Whitaker yet again and not Cohen or Gosling (never mind Leo since he's not usually in the mix anyway no matter how good he is). I saw The Departed again this afternoon (my second viewing only I must confess -- haven't seen it since it first came out), and I thought it was even better the second time around. I really felt more emotionally invested in the characters. Two things -- DiCaprio was truly superb as Billy, an emotional time bomb who was just incredibly vulnerable as Madolyn noticed, really the emotional center/heart for the film -- there was an audible gasp in the audience at this viewing when the awful moment arrived, and Mark Wahlberg was, simply put, amazing here, along with Alec Baldwin. In fact, everyone was even better than I remembered the first time out. I think the critics should have rewatched the film, if they haven't already before voting any awards for acting. It doesn't get much better than this. I hope it wins Best Ensemble at SAG. Fully and completely deserving.

Courtney- 01-06-2007

According to Tom O'Neil, Whittaker and O'Toole got the most votes, so close they voted twice. The others all got a smattering of votes. Congrats for Mark - I thought he did an excellent job. btw, josephc, why the avoidance of replying to my comments to you on the discuss the film thread? Although, the silence in itself says a lot. :lol:I still would like your comments on the SAG topic; I know you would have had a lot to say if your prediction was correct.

Courtney, I'm not sure what you mean, but I haven't visited the board for a day or so so I really haven't made any comments on SAG yet. I'm certainly pleased with the ensemble placement, though. I hope it wins, but who knows. Surprised about Jack and Mark -- guess the supporting placement for Leo for Departed threw them because elsewhere a guy mentioned on the incontention.com forum (Tapley) that as member of SAG he just marked Leo's name where he saw it for Departed and didn't even think about Jack or anyone else. I think Leo stands as good or better a chance of winning that category than as lead, but who knows. I don't know how SAG could not vote Departed for best ensemble, though. Seems a no-brainer but Dreamgirls or Babel will probably get it --- UGH!!! You see my comments on the board about my last viewing of the film yesterday. Thought it even better second time around and Leo was really great (almost classic, really). Can't understand that some critics actually didn't think that much of his performance here (Edelstein, Thelma Adams -aka she who refuses to give DiCaprio a decent review), because it's truly the heart and emotional center of a film full of fine performances. Found myself near tears when he was talking to Madolyn in her office -- and the "your vulnerability..." scene in Madolyn's apartment. As for SAG placement for Best Actor for Blood Diamond -- who knows? -- I think there's even a slight chance of that at the oscars - with Leo even in supporting for Departed (and winning), but it's probably a longer shot to be sure. It's also possible but hopefully unlikely that he could get snubbed by oscar altogether. If so, that would be a crying shame, because he really is wonderful in this film.
