josephc, I asked you for a reply because I assumed you read my comments on the film discussion thread as you made comments right after that, but directed to another poster. It's always curious to me your comments about Leonardo and his chances on nominations, let alone winning them - that is, zip, nil, according to you -as it was with SAG, so I at least expected you to make some comments about his double nomination (triple, counting the ensemble) there. As for critics, Leonardo has gotten the best reviews of his career for The Departed from the majority of reviewers and as well from many critics for Blood Diamond. No actor is ever going to get unanimous positive reviews. I've even read some not so positive comments about Forest Whittaker, hard to believe as that may be. So why are you obssessed with what a few critics had to say like Edelstein and Thelma Adams (who?) and LOL, Ted Casablanca. Let me say, its fine if you don't think highly of Leonardo or some of his work (I know there will always be detractors and as well, acting style is a personal preference) but be real about it, don't say one thing one day and then another or something somewhere else and word it differently here.
btw, its nice you think so highly of TD and Leonardo after your second recent viewing but I don't think you need to advise others to see it again (I think many have already). The TD has been on almost all the top ten lists and in many of them, the top pick and Leonardo on the lists of many top perfomance lists. Its nice to see you joining the crowd.

No need to take any of my comments so personally, Courtney. I'm a fan like yourself. I consider myself realistic, read lots of different takes on all this stuff, and that's my take on what I read. If it's different from yours, then so be it. I refrain from any personal comments on particular posters opinions generally speaking. Everyone has their own opinion. I'll respect yours if you respect mine. That sort of thing. If I sound too negative to you, well, that's not necessarily true, imo, but you're welcome to feel that way. I'm not telling anyone to go see the film again, btw, as I realize many here already have.

josephc - thanks for your response again. btw, you did read my initial question to you on the other thread, why deny it? As far as not making personal comments about other posters, I wasn't aware I was making personal comments. You made some comments here and I responded, is that not what a discussion board is for? If you're going to imply you're a realistic fan and other fans are not realistic, then you are the one being personal towards others. As far as being a realistic, if you are so realistic, why do you discount all the positive buzz for Leonardo, all the references to his being in top performances of 2006 lists, all the predictions from prognosticators that he will be an Oscar nom and a strong one at that. You only focus on the negative it seems to me; instead of considering all the positive reviews he has gotten, you bring up a couple of reviewers who can't be considered "important" reviewers in any sense Edelstein and Thelma Adams ( who I now know is the reviewer for US Weekly -are you kidding me?). As far as the SAG, you again focus on the negative and say perhaps Leonardo only got nom'ed because voters only saw his name and didn't realize they were voting him for Supporting(?!). You certainly have a right to your opinions; I just wonder why you get affronted by someone asking you to explain your reasons behind them. I hope on a discussion board like this we can be adults and discuss such topics without you resorting to a ploy such as telling me I am taking things personally and thereby again, refraining to get behind your own comments. btw, I understood you were saying that critics should go see the movie again, not posters here. I think many critics have seen it a couple of times, some have stated it was a movie they wanted to see over again, they enjoyed it that much.

I've already stated how I feel about the board, postings, etc. No further comment is really too necessary beyond the fact that I like DiCaprio -- a lot, and hope he is nominated and wins something this season. Fine performances in both films. Great chance of a nomination for something. Not being any more negative, less realistic, than Arnzilla, Will or a few others here. :)
Courtney- 01-07-2007
I may be wrong but I don't think so: Arnzilla nor Will have ever made any predictions about nominations re LD, and certainly not in the vein you have. It's funny; when a discussion suddenly starts to get uncomformtable for you, then you're not so eager to discuss anymore. Again, this is a discussion board to discuss TD, its participants, the awards seasons, reviews, etc. If you make comments, then people are supposed to reply and discuss, no? You can't choose and decide what's up for discussion and what isn't all of a sudden, LOL. I guess when people agree with you, comments are welcome, but when people question you, then suddenly its no longer up for discussion? You keep stating you like LD a lot - you miss my point, I could care less what you think of him; just asking the rationale behind your predictions. If its a simple matter of that's just your feeling, fine. I asked a simple question initially; quite honestly, it annoyed me that you avoided answering it and annoyed even further when you denied seeing my question and now you've made it into a huge thing,LOL.
LOL, "no comment" is a very appropriate (as well as a convenient and predictable) comment from you. Didn't expect you to come up with one anyway, you historically never do when faced with being asked to account for your, now, predicatable predictions which fail to come to true, just hopefully forgotten, just as you seemed to have forgotten what you posted earlier today.
Courtney, I'm not sure what you mean, but I haven't visited the board for a day or so so I really haven't made any comments on SAG yet.

DGA announces nominees"Sunshine" directing duo Dayton and Faris, Condon and Scorsese among contenders.
By Susan King, Times Staff Writer
January 9, 2007
For the first time in 45 years, the Directors Guild of America has nominated a directing team for its DGA Award for outstanding directorial achievement in fea-ture film for 2006.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris were nominated Tuesday for the 59th annual DGA Award for "Little Miss Sunshine," a dark comedy about a dysfunctional family determined to have their young daughter participate in a beauty con-*test*-('").
Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins were the last team nomi-nated for the top DGA prize for 1961's "West Side Story." The duo went on to win not only the DGA award, but also the Academy Award for best director
Other nominees announced Tuesday were Bill Condon for the lavish musical "Dreamgirls," Stephen Frears' for his Queen Elizabeth II drama "The Queen," Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for his multilayered global drama "Babel" and Martin Scorsese for his gangster thriller, "The De-parted,"
Scorsese is the only repeat nomi-nee among the five, having previ-ously received nominations for 1976's "Taxi Driver," 1980's "Raging Bull," 1990's "GoodFellas," 1993's "The Age of Innocence," 2002's "Gangs of New York" and 2004's "The Aviator." Three years ago, he won the organization's highest artistic honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Notably missing from the list of nominees was two-time DGA award-winner Clint Eastwood for "Letters from Iwo Jima."
The Japanese-language World War II drama won top film honors from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures and the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn., and Eastwood is nominated for two Golden Globes for best director for "Iwo Jima" and its compan-ion piece "Flags of Our Fathers."
Irish filmmaker Paul Greengrass, who won best director honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics, for his 9/11 drama "United 93," also failed to win a nomination.
