As always ...just my proverbial 'two cents' and as you well know my pockets are always full of 'two cents'
But since no other BP had a lead actor nod I don't think that the lack of TD nod for DiCaprio hurts the film in anyway.
Plus I think most know since he has rec'd two nods for BFCA/SAG/GLOBES it was quite possible that if they had allowed two nods in one category DiCaprio would had TD lead nod as well..
As I said earlier I was shocked by no Jack...but could be that the voters wanted to let more 'newbies' in so they gave only ONE of the supporting nods to TD/Mark rather than Jack who already has a well stocked Oscar cabinet
And ..yes...Babel got two supporting nods but I don't think anyone expects Hudson to lose ...so those two nods are not impt
And ..yes....Dreamgirls got two acting nods but that didn't help it even get a BP nod....
And as Arnz always said...editing is essential...and only TD & Babel got editing nod ...
Plus TD got the essential screenplay nod with Monahan for adapted screenplay..
Bottom line I still feel pretty good about Scorsese & Co bringing "the bacon" home on Feb 25th .... :)

Thanks, Peanut. I'll be counting on you to find the positives throughout the next month...

Maybe it doesn't hurt it, but it would help.

Shocked with the Nicholson thing, too. Him not getting in was only a very recent scenario. He was the only sure thing from even before the film had started filming. But even though some voters might have thought the way you described, it is my opinion that if we could see the ballots we would see 3 or 4 Departed actors being featured in the supporting category, in various combinations. I guess Wahlberg must have been the more constant one.
It's just a pity to see a film that has the performances as one of its main highlights, to finally make it to the oscars, but with only a supporting nomination. It feels as if that aspect of the film is not recognized enough.

For sure no Nicholson was a shock...and agree many have long felt that he was a lock for supporting ...a 'done deal'
And for sure ...with the great performances by DiCaprio/Damon/Nicholson/Winstone/Wahlberg it seems odd to see only one official nod....
But I know you read OW and what I noticed is that the most individual FYC ads taken out by Warners were for Mark.
Did I mention I love this photo of these two talents and friends
And below is what I hope is going to happen with today's Oscar nods ..
The final ballots for SAG are due Jan 26th....
The actors will ...like us...noticed lack of a lot of acting nods for "TD" and that will only serve to make them for sure mark TD for SAG ENSEMBLE !!!
As I have always hoped that would be an 'acting award' for sure the cast would win !!!

Academy Awards Hi everyone & thanks for the news & links.
Gotta say...
I'm a little disappointed AND surprised to see TD end up with only 5 noms.
I would've expected at least 7...maybe 8.
This is Scorsese's year.
I believe he'll win Best Director & I'm so HOPING TD wins Best Picture.
Yeah.
I'm also surprised to see no nod to Jack.
I liked Wahlberg's Dignam but I would've preferred Jack to get the Supporting Actor nod. 8)
arnzilla- 01-23-2007
So what do you all think of the chances for Best Picture now? Better or worse?Considering that its $121 million more than doubles the revenue of its nearest competition, I'd say better. No Dreamgirls also makes it better. I could see a case made for ANY of the nominees now. God only knows what's gonna happen.
I guess the way the AMPAS voting works is responsible for these surprises. Jack may have been featured on more ballots than Mark, but he may have been featured toward the bottom, like at number 4 or 5. Mark may have been featured on a fraction of ballots, but at number 1 or 2. Like I said several months ago after those early reviews started rolling in: I wonder if Mark was prepared for this.
Leo may have had enough of an impact for his Departed performance to land him in the top five twice, yet be denied a Departed nom due to the rules. I wouldn't disregard Blood Diamond's strong showing today when it comes to the reason why he was nommed for that film instead of TD. AMPAS apparently liked it. Warners may actually be glad the screwy way they handled things, since the noms may wind up helping both films at the box office now. And I'm telling you (har-har), with Dreamgirls out of the picture, box office is TD's strongest asset. Being back in the top ten when ballots go out will only help. Meanwhile, Babel's biggest liability is its anemic box office. That's why a LMS/Marty split seems likelier to me at this point, sorta resembling the Driving Miss Daisy/Oliver Stone split. There was no Best Director nom for Daisy either.
Assuming Scorsese wins the DGA, I can't realistically see him losing the Oscar. But if he does lose, it would be too ridiculous to be considered a devastating defeat. In fact, there might be some perverse pleasure in it. It would validate all his other losses in a way. No more could anyone sincerely say that his losses are chalked up to "bad timing" or "bad luck." I dare AMPAS to not him award him Best Director. I fucking DARE them. A loss would be a victory of sorts. To quote Joe Pesci in Raging Bull... Marty, if you win you win. If you lose, you still win. In other words, go ahead make my day. Award Clint again if you have the balls.
BTW, I think Sacha Cohen is a bigger threat to Monahan than Clint is to Marty.
az_sun- 01-23-2007
A $64,000 question for all of you.
If you were Leo, who would you vote for in the supporting actor category?
His old buddy Mark, or his new buddy Djimon.
Also, Leo has to choose between Thelma and the editors for "Blood Diamond," Stephen Mirrione and Douglas Crise.
He has some tough choices.
will- 01-23-2007
No Dreamgirls also makes it better.
There are a lot of people who wanted to support Dreamgirls all the way to a win. We need to figure out which film they're going to support now. Can't see a lot of overlapping going on with that film and The Departed.
I wouldn't disregard Blood Diamond's strong showing today when it comes to the reason why he was nommed for that film instead of TD. AMPAS apparently liked it.
Alan Horn liked it.
Warners may actually be glad the screwy way they handled things, since the noms may wind up helping both films at the box office now. And I'm telling you (har-har), with Dreamgirls out of the picture, box office is TD's strongest asset. Being back in the top ten when ballots go out will only help.
I think Blood Diamond benefits more, at least internationally. The Departed was always considered a box office hit and a few more millions will not make a difference for the best picture race, since the other nominees are far behind. What you mention, though, about the Top 10 is something to think about.
And I, at least, don't like the screw-ups Warners made. Do they prefer two films with a few nominations, or one film that wins Best Picture?
I agree with everything you said about Scorsese and Best Director. In fact, I don't want him to win anymore. But I think when oscar night comes along... eh, you want to see him happy. :)
I'm not counting out an Eastwood win at all, either at film or director or both. I think he's the one who will come out a winner whatever the result, because even if he loses, he'll just blame it on a makeup/overdue win for Scorsese. At the Globes, he gave his widest "smile" when Babel won (or The Departed lost).
BTW, I think Sacha Cohen is a bigger threat to Monahan than Clint is to Marty.
Don't say that, not even as a joke...
I wonder how the campaigning for Marty will continue now. WB have two directors nominated. Have we had any comments from Scorsese yet?
az_sun,
Does Leo vote? I'd pick Wahlberg, because Hounsou's part is bordering on lead.
And, in my opinion, there's no comparison in Editing. In fact, there were times when the editing in BD was bad.
StormyTeacup- 01-23-2007
Congratuations to all the nominees except Eastwood
I'm really thrilled for Mark 8) 8)
surprised about Leo & Jack
fingers crossed for 5 wins for TD :D :D

Oscar credits? Here we go again
Producers awaiting Acad's credit check
By TIMOTHY M. GRAY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So who did what? And when will we know?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences will assemble arbitration boards to figure out the eligibility of producers of "The Departed" and "Little Miss Sunshine," both of which were listed as "nominees to be determined."
The state of limbo is relatively new. Before 1999, the Acad gave a producer nom to whoever was listed. But after five producers ran to the stage to accept for the 1998 "Shakespeare in Love," the Acad limited the number of eligible producers to three. Two years ago, the org announced it will follow Producers Guild of America guidelines.
"Sunshine" has five onscreen producers, which is OK by PGA rules, but is too many for the Acad.
The issue of producer credits keeps evolving as the Academy seeks a level playing field. But the org will have to address the fact that five writers are allowed on the screenplays for "Borat" and "Children of Men," but five are too many for producers.
"Departed" is a separate issue. The pic lists four producers. The PGA announced Graham King as the sole producer -- a decision the guild upheld after Brad Grey appealed.
The Academy has "had a request to re-examine the Producers Guild credits," according to AMPAS exec director Bruce Davis, who declined to name the person(s) who requested it.
Aside from King, the onscreen credits for "Departed" list Grey, Brad Pitt and Martin Scorsese as producers.
On Saturday, the PGA gave its prize to "Sunshine's" Marc Turtletaub, David T. Friendly, Peter Saraf, Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa.
The "Sunshine" group has the option of deciding themselves which three get the Oscar nom. Otherwise, the Acad will decide.
The "to be determined" situation is unusual, but not unprecedented. In the race for 2004 films, three of the pic contenders had their credits in limbo at the time of the nomination: "The Aviator," "Million Dollar Baby" and "Ray."
As for the PGA, it gives producers a questionnaire regarding their participation in some 50 tasks related to a particular film. Under the PGA rules, a producer must complete at least 50% of the tasks. Development and post-production count for 30% each, while pre-production and production count for 20% each.
Last year, Bob Yari sued the PGA and the Academy for being excluded from his work on "Crash" (which had 14 various producers).
Since the PGA does the homework, the Acad uses the findings as a guideline, but doesn't accept them automatically. If anyone questions the PGA decision, he or she can appeal to the Academy. Members of the producers branch executive committee then make their own ruling.

Tough choices for Leo - not sure if he votes though.
arnzilla- 01-24-2007
And I, at least, don't like the screw-ups Warners made. Do they prefer two films with a few nominations, or one film that wins Best Picture?
Anne Thompson's article in The Hollywood Reporter puts some of Warner's early tiptoeing on DiCaprio's shoulders:
he refused to campaign against his "Departed" co-stars in the supporting actor category, the actor's press agent Ken Sunshine said.
Warners bought no supporting actor ads for DiCaprio. "There were 800 different narratives of what might happen," Sunshine said. "The last thing we wanted to do was manipulate the system. We decided to let things take their natural course."

I can't keep up here - thanks stormyteacup -
I thought my tax forms were enough of a headache.
Grateful I'm not a member of AMPAS.
And Leo has big shoulders!
goodfella- 01-24-2007
About the producers issue, I think the best for TD would be to put martin scorsese as producer also so he will finally take 2 oscars to his home!!!!!
arnzilla- 01-24-2007
An amusing post from the PolandCurse.com blog:
Marty has already made his peace with this Oscar business. To me, The Departed is an allegory for the 2004 Oscar race with Matt Damon (Eastwood - the biggest oscar whore since Beatty '75-'81) staring longingly at the Boston Statehouse golden dome (alot like Oscar's cranium). DiCaprio (Scorsese) goes undercover for lunatic Frank (Weinstein) and starts being uncomfortable in his own skin. He sees Annette Bening thrown off the roof by Hilary Swank and starts to worry about his chances. Scorsese tells himself M$B is nothing but a few fancy lighting tricks. There's a mentally challenged guy saying the N-word. And Maggie's family, holy crap, Maggie's family, how can people vote for that? He convinces himself he's won, then suddenly loses (gets shot). Scorsese was probably told by hundreds of academy voters in 2002 and 2004 that they had his vote, but they're all rats in Hollywood. Lying two-faced rats. Only Ray Winstone (Thelma Schoonmaker) can be trusted. The movie ends with a rat and the Oscar.
Maybe Scorsese will get to play Wahlberg's role this year. Maybe not. Maybe @#$* yourself.
