I found this review of TD on the NBR website.
October 2006: The Departed
by John Gallagher
THE DEPARTED: Any new film by Martin Scorsese is cause for celebration. His la-*test*-('"), the cop thriller THE DEPARTED, is cause for dancing in the streets. It is an Instant Classic, vintage Marty right up there with GOODFELLAS and CASINO, violent and funny, more complex than either of those masterworks. Jack Nicholson is sublime as another great Scorsese villain, the equal of Daniel Day-Lewis’ Bill the Butcher or Robert DeNiro’s Jimmy Conway; Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg do the best work of their careers, and Scorsese gives actress Vera Formiga (a familiar face in many indies, including her Sundance-winning turn in DOWN TO THE BONE) a mainstream movie-star making role (a la Juliette Lewis in CAPE FEAR, Lorraine Bracco in GOODFELLAS and Cathy Moriarty in RAGING BULL). At the NBR screening of THE DEPARTED, I asked DiCaprio, the veteran of Scorsese’s GANGS OF NEW YORK and THE AVIATOR, how, after decades of police movies and TV shows, the genre could be as revitalized as it is in THE DEPARTED. The actor commented, simply, that Martin Scorsese knows his vintage movies – words that should be heeded by every film student out there. Know what’s come before, the way a writer studies Shakespeare and Faulkner. It is no coincidence that our grea-*test*-('") living director is also one of our grea-*test*-('") film historians. As Peter Bogdanovich has said, if you haven’t seen a movie from 1932, it’s not an old movie, it’s a new movie. Every frame of THE DEPARTED is informed by Scorsese’s prodigious cinematic knowledge, yet he creates an entirely new and original masterpiece. It’s not to be missed, and I look forward to repeat screenings.

As happy as I am with The Departed love I must say the top 10 list is horrible. How the hell could they put mediocre crap like Blood Diamond, The Devil Wears Prada, The History Boys and Flags Of Our Fathers over United 93, The Queen, Little Children, and Half Nelson? Anyway NBR is usually very wrong with their picks but at least The Departed is looking very dominant with the director and second ensemble win. Also Im actually excited for Letters From Iwo Jimma now it better wash the FOOF taste out of my mouth.

As always ...different folks = different strokes ...
I thought "BD" was a good film and do not perceive it to be "mediocre crap "

A NY Times Carpetbagger tease:
December 8, 2006
It’s Up to You, New York, but Not Really
On Monday, millions will be waiting breathlessly for the results from the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Okay, that’s patently not true, but dozens, at least, will be breathing heavily as they wait to find out what gives. The Bagger has done nothing by way of investigation, save talking to a friend who talked to some other friends who know some people. So, with a sampling error that approaches 100 percent, he can say with certain uncertainty that “The Departed” might sneak in.
Many of the voting critics are all over the map and folks are wondering if there might be a repeat of the 2001 awards, where there were big partisans of “In the Bedroom” and other who felt just as ferociously about “Gosford Park.” Then “Mulholland Drive” came zooming up the middle as the second choice of first resort.
This year, some love the tidy achievement of “The Queen,” while others are stuck on “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Alfonso Cuarón has his posse as well, so maybe “Children of Men” will get its first visibility of the season. And a dark horse has appeared on the horizon — “Army of Shadows,” the ecstatically reviewed 1969 French film, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, about the French Resistance that was released for the first time here this year. Think of the frisson of awarding Best Picture to a 37-year-old movie. Isn’t it just, well, too-too?
Don’t look for “Letters from Iwo Jima” to remain on a New York roll. The smartypants who sit in this circle have a bit of a Clint issue, and refused to get their arms around either “Mystic River” or “Million Dollar Baby.”
Having spread his bets all over the table, there is no way the Bagger comes up a winner. Well, okay, he’ll put a dime on “Departed.”

Pea I found BD a waste of time only slightly saved by the great performances by the actors and some good action scenes here and there. Surely there is no reason for it to get in over United 93 or The Queen, hell even Dreamgirls seems like it was snubbed for no good reason. Sadly as much as I was dissapointed by BD, its not even the worst movie on the top 10 which includes Flags and The History Boys, I wouldn't call any of them worst films of the year but they are certanly not worth getting into top 10 list in a year that gave us many gret films.
I really think The Departed will score big with both NYFCC and LAFCA awards, it could go the way of Brokeback and Sideways and take them both.
On a side note Boston critics are announcing their awards on Sunday too, they have a very good taste in films and well The Departed is set in their home town. :D

Actually that's a great idea.

Any chance you could make one for the board like our snail-o-meter for the release date. Then we'd be able to see how it's doing at a glance.

Mantas, you haven't really explained your opinion though. What make BD such a bad film in your eyes? Every clip I've seen has amazed me, both emotionally and visually... And I'm probably going to see it this week sometime so I can truly judge.

The action scenes aren't bad, its mostly the script that brings it down it has to be one of the stupidest scropts I've seen this year. Zwick is a little better then usual, but still the direction feels clumsy and the film doesn't know if it wants to be a fast paced action movie or a slower paced political thriller and it ends up making the transitions between the two which really makes it hard to focus on the movie. Who knows maybe you'll like it yourself, I recommend seeing it for the performances alone.
