The action scenes aren't bad, its mostly the script that brings it down it has to be one of the stupidest scropts I've seen this year. Zwick is a little better then usual, but still the direction feels clumsy and the film doesn't know if it wants to be a fast paced action movie or a slower paced political thriller and it ends up making the transitions between the two which really makes it hard to focus on the movie. Who knows maybe you'll like it yourself, I recommend seeing it for the performances alone. Hmm, I just find it hard to believe that the script is so bad, especially when some of the lines I've heard are so good: "Sometime I wonder, will God ever forgive us for what we've done to each other? Then I look around and I realize God left this place a long time ago." Sorry, but stuff like that is utterly poetic, poignant and just plain brilliant in my opinion... But I'll find out hopefully this tuesday if the film is somehow as bad as you say... or if people are being way too hard on this film for whatever reason.

Thanks, peanut... The NY Online Film Critics had nothing for the Departed either.

yapi- 12-10-2006

oscar races are over for best actor and best actress. Whitaker and Mirren will take it at home. mirren and whitakerwon nbr, boston , LA and new york critics awards. If dicaprio is smart, he sticks with best supporting for the departed...like that he could have, at least, the chance to win something that he deserves since a long time (an oscar) even if his role was not supporting at all.

Peanut80- 12-10-2006

Will Thanks for online list :) Yes....noticed they went big time for "The Queen".. Tomorra we have NYFC And...Thurs =The Globes.... So onward we go ..

josephc- 12-10-2006

No surprise there -- with obtuse critics like Ed Douglas chiming in (he really did not like The Departed), but their choices are generally different, anyhow. Still, The Queen was a good solid piece of work but I doubt most folks will remember it beyond Helen Mirren in a few years. It does smack of Mahs-tah-peece The-ah-Ta. The Departed is a different story.

piglet3- 12-10-2006

Well, at least the NY Online Film Critics didn't name "Flags" or "Letters." As for the AFI, what the hell were they smoking? And more Clint love from the L.A. Critics. I hope there's a good movie I can watch on Oscar night. Wont "The Departed" DVD be out by then? Hmm, I just find it hard to believe that the script is so bad, especially when some of the lines I've heard are so good: "Sometime I wonder, will God ever forgive us for what we've done to each other? Then I look around and I realize God left this place a long time ago." Sorry, but stuff like that is utterly poetic, poignant and just plain brilliant in my opinion... But I'll find out hopefully this tuesday if the film is somehow as bad as you say... or if people are being way too hard on this film for whatever reason. Art, I saw "Blood Diamond" on Friday. Leo is terrific. I really thought I was watching Danny Archer, not Leo. However, the script is pretty bad. Not as bad as some movies I've seen. And like you noted, it does have some great, poetic lines. In fact, the passage you quoted is particulary moving and appealed to my existential leanings. I also liked Danny's comment of "when is the world not in a mess" (or something like that). But there are too many times in the movie that you think -- there is no way that would happen. And near the ending, there are very poignent moments, and then it gets ruined by corny dialogue and the actors doing things that seem unreasonable given their circumstances. I'm probably not making sense but I don't want to give too much away. This being said, I recommend you see it, if only for Leo's performance.

If dicaprio is smart, he sticks with best supporting for the departed...like that he could have, at least, the chance to win something that he deserves since a long time (an oscar) even if his role was not supporting at all. That would be a stupid idea, and no Dicaprio doesn't have more chances in Supporting. If anyone from The Departed was to take it it would be Nicholson since he has gotten the majority of raves from critics plus AMPAS adores everything that man does. Leo should stick in Lead where he belongs and be happy with a nom.

yapi- 12-10-2006

Mantas : The role of whitaker is a supporting one but he goes lead. why dicaprio could not do the reverse thing ? I heard that clooney was lead in syriana but end up winning the oscar last year in the best supporting category. in training day : denzel was supporting, hawk was lead but they reverse the thing for the oscar. why dicaprio couldn't do it the same ?
