Frank Torrance- 09-28-2006

It's great to read all these reviews... Marty hits gold with this one! Too bad I have to wait more than a month to see it (the date is nov. 9 in my country). But, it could be worse I think

Thanks, arnzilla For a film with so many twists, it looks like it will have many repeat viewers. Frank Torrance, yeah, it could be worse! :(

Arnzilla As to your comment below I don't think she's saying that they weren't Oscar-worthy. She's saying that she may have lost credibility pushing their Oscar-worthiness during their respective Oscar runs, especially The Aviator which she knew wasn't the favorite on the eve of the ceremony, but still picked it to win. So you are saying you felt she wasn't referring to 'quality of film/performances /etc in Gangs/Aviator...but...rather...her ability to correctly predict which films/performances the majority of Academy voters would select ...right ? Also...thanks...for blog excerpt.... :)

arnzilla- 09-28-2006

Yes. Here are her top tens for 2002 and 2004... http://www.smmirror.com/volume4/issue29/top_ten_films.asp http://www.smmirror.com/volume6/issue31/without_furthur_ado.asp GONY and The Aviator are the highest ranked of the five Best Pic nominees for their respective years.

Arnz Thanks for finding this info in archives and linking it for me :) As you say she was referring to the scenario of what SHOULD win versus what WILL win and how well her site did 'predicting' the WILL outcome

"Act accordingly"
lena... GRAZIE for the review by Peter Travers. Travers has been one of my FAVORITE reviewers for a long time & I think this is the BEST review I've read thus far. LOVE this: Though DiCaprio and Damon share only one big scene, their climactic rooftop face-off reflects the film's bleak view of a world where nothing is held sacred. Okay...Lennon & NAS. NAS has a BUNCH of GREAT CDs... whoa. It could be any of a number of songs. His CD It Was Written has some AMAZING tracks that pop in my head... "Gave You Power", "Take It in Blood", "The Set Up", ... But...the Beach Boys??? Whoa. That one has me scratchin' my head! What possible BB song would Scorsese use in TD??? And where???

Not a personal favorite critic of mine. Travers seems to kiss ass to some people and his reviews are all over the place.

arnzilla- 09-29-2006

Thanks for the RS review, Lena. Travers' first line is a direct slap at Jeff Wells. It's Travers' only 4-star film this year, along with United 93.And Scott Tobias gave only two A's so far this year for the same two films.
