The Long Play
Ah, first time posting on here for the OSCAR WINNING The Departed. First off I gotta say its wicked that this film has so rightfully gotten the praise it deserves. I've been following the making of this film since before even The Aviator came out. I remember over two years ago when I was iffy about the project- The Aviator hadn't come out so all I had to base Leo's work for Scorsese was on Gangs of New York (I still think he was miscast for THAT film), I wasn;t hip on the idea of another remake, and I didn't even think "Infernal Affairs" was that good a movie (I still don't). I felt it was beneath Scorsese and everyone was just happy cause it was ANOTHER Mob movie. Of course that didn't last long. Maybe all of two weeks. Suddenly there was Matt in the cast, Mark (who I had like reseen Boogie Nights the day before he was announced so I was even more excited when he was cast than when Jack was). I was there (in spirit) when filming started shooting and everyone did a double take and said- ALEC BALDWIN IS IN THIS???? I was a silent observer on this site when the early -*test*-('") screening reviews came in and people were saying- "It's all right." I've now seen the film countless freaking times and while its not in my top 5 Scorsese films its my favorite film of teh past 2 or 3 years. Those 5 Marty films would be: Goodfellas- the film that inspired me to be a filmmaker and I'm finally living the dream!...on a small scale Raging Bull Taxi Driver Last Temptation After Hours/Bringing Out the Dead/Mean Streets/Casino ....Ok I cheated on the last one there. And of course now I've seen Marty FINALLY get the Oscar he should've had the FIRST TIME in 1976. Really, in a perfect world we'd be celebrating Marty's 5th or 6th Directing Oscar. Anywho, enough ranting I'm just here to drop in ANOTHER possible future project for Marty on top of the 500 other ones piling up. http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=9035 THE LONG PLAY sounds like THE PERFECT SCORSESE FILM. I hope he does SILENCE next but of all the other "Possible Marty Films" out there this is the grea-*test*-('") sounding one YET! Forget "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt", let it be Silence in 2008 and The Long Play in 2010!!!!!!

Thanks :) The article makes it seem like this is an idea that was recently pitched to Marty, but I remember something very similar being mentioned 3-4 years ago. About a story that would present the music developments in the last few decades. Jagger and Scorsese were thought to be working together on that one. Does anyone remember it?

Okay, I found it: Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, CA) March 19, 2003 Section: Beck/Smith DiCaprio, Jagger to make rock pic Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith Look for Leonardo DiCaprio to team with Mick Jagger in a big-screen expose of the pop world - as soon as he gets other commitments behind him. Right now Leo is gearing up to make the Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator," with Martin Scorsese directing. When that's finished, he will get in character for "Alexander the Great," which Scorsese will produce and Baz Luhrmann will direct. And after that ... Scorsese reveals that a second-draft script has been completed on "The Long Play," a study of the rock business from the '60s to the '90s that he has been working on with Jagger for several years. He tips that it should roll next year and that he expects a leading part to be handled by his "Gangs of New York" star - which will make it four in a row for the team of DiCaprio and Scorsese.

Onefilmlover and Will Thanks for all the assorted news about "Long Play" project :)

A Script Review of one of the earlier drafts (not the Monahan one) from LatinoReview.com! http://www.latinoreview.com/news.php?id=1869 It's more like a rundown of scenes... plot, characters and events are revealed.

Great find! Thanks, Will. How about Terrence Howard as Sam and Adrien Brody as Herbie?

will- 04-25-2007

How about Terrence Howard as Sam and Adrien Brody as Herbie? Are you thinking of one set of actors to play the characters through the decades? If so, Brody works for me, but Howard not so much... I don't know how much younger he can appear. Don Cheadle is a bit older but I could see him in the part. Maybe Jamie Foxx or Taye Diggs. Some choices for Herbie: Edward Norton, Zach Braff, Sacha Baron Cohen, James McAvoy, Joseph Fiennes, Jason Schwartzman, Sam Rockwell...

johnny_lips- 04-25-2007

I think Howard would be great as Sam. Brody would be fine, but I think the person who really should be casted in this role is Christian Bale. He, along with DiCaprio, are by far the 2 most talented young actors working today. DiCaprio would be fine, but this looks unlikely since he's working on Revoutionary Road this summer. Bale is the person for this role. Plus, if Scorsese can't get Danny Day-Lewis for the lead role of Rodrigo in Silence, then Bale is by far the most perfect person for this role. Perhaps Scorsese can use Bale in LONG PLAY as a training sesh, you know, to get to know him and his acting style and stuff like that, and then use him in his passion project SILENCE, which he's wanted to make since 1990.

arnzilla- 04-26-2007

Yes, one set of actors for the whole film. I don't see Christian Bale portraying a Brooklyn Jew named Herbie. :D Before I settled on Brody, the first person to cross my mind was indeed Braff. But he doesn't seem mature enough to have a teenaged daughter.

johnny_lips- 04-28-2007

How about Johnny Depp then?

will- 04-30-2007

Yes, something about Bale and his voice doesn't quite fit. I imagine someone more sly and fast-moving and perhapes a bit hyper. I guess Depp could make it work, but his looks and age might be a problem... Here's a short audio clip of Jagger talking about the story (taken from here).

Another indication that The Long Play might be next... Scorsese talks about "why he's segueing from working with Jack Nicholson to Mick Jagger." in a new interview for Rolling Stone's 40th anniversary issue. (taken from here)

Will Thanks for the script review. It seems to have all the kind of elements that Scorsese would warm to. It has a Goodfellas feel to it with the music business replacing organised crime. It would be good to hear something definite about Scorsese's next project. It seems that even Oscar winning directors struggle to get their projects of the ground. :?

Another mention of The Long Play in Oct's Vanity Fair... In The New Establishment, #60 Mick Jagger COOL FRIEND: Martin Scorsese, whose upcoming (recently delayed) documentary, Shine a Light, captures the band on tour last year. (Jagger is also working with the director on a new feature film, tentatively called The Long Play.)

will- 03-28-2008

From an article about Shine a Light: Scorsese said the assignment grew out of his friendship with Mick Jagger. The two have been working on a movie about the music business for a number of years that Scorsese hopes to finally mount after his la-*test*-('") production is finished.
