DUMBO biz Brainstorm and Martin Scorsese team up for HBO project 'Boardwalk Empire'

BY Michael Lipkin
Daily News Staff Writer

A Brooklyn-based digital effects studio is using its movie magic to turn Greenpoint into Atlantic City of the Roaring Twenties for director Martin Scorsese's latest project, "Boardwalk Empire."

The upcoming HBO pilot stars Brooklyn's Steve Buscemi as a businessman-turned-bootlegger who takes control of the city's political machine.

The Greenpoint set re-created storefronts, boardwalks and cars, but Brooklyn's Brainstorm Digital will add skylines, billboards, piers and beaches.

Brainstorm, film pros who have worked on "Synecdoche, New York" and "Mission to Mars," said TV can be just as demanding as film.

"It's our most complex job to date," said Glenn Allen, visual effects producer and co-founder of Brainstorm, located in DUMBO. "Everything is HD now, so we have to treat it like a feature film."

Instead of using traditional paintings for the backgrounds, Brainstorm is using the latest software to create 3-D models of the hotels, piers and mansions of Atlantic City. Those models can be rotated and repositioned to allow for trickier camera shots - unlike 2-D paintings, which only work with a fixed camera angle.

"There's a lot of free-form movement [in the pilot] opposed to locked cameras," said visual effects artist Chris Wesselman. "So, all of a sudden, it's a 3-D shot."

The Brainstorm team, tasked with turning one of the largest sets in New York into a picture-perfect re-creation of Atlantic City, spent weeks researching for its computer models.

"Anytime you get to work on a period piece, it's more fun," Wesselman said. "We got to explore what the old Atlantic City was really like."

Wesselman dug up vintage postcards, architectural plans and ads to make his depictions of boardwalks as accurate as possible.

"The piers were one of the toughest parts because every summer they would change - new houses, new advertisements," Wesselman said.

Filming wrapped up last week, and Brainstorm will take at least two months to add in all their effects.

Though Allen, a former editor for film director Ron Howard, isn't as up to date on computer graphics as he used to be, he said he will work on the show "here and there."

"I'll do some of the easier stuff if I get a chance," Allen said. "I still like to get my hands dirty."

These TV critics are guessing Summer or Fall 2010.

TV chat transcript, Aug. 6, 2009

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Jonathan Storm: Good morning, everybody. Rob Owen and I got up at 6 a.m. to do all our work before starting on this at 8 a.m. in sunny Southern California where we're learning all about the new fall season. Post your questions and comments.

Comment From morales: Any update on when HBO's Boardwalk Empire will debut? Thanks

RobOwen: HBO execs said they're waiting to see a cut of the pilot and if they like it, they're ready to proceed to series production in Sept. So it's a ways before it actually airs. I would guess late summer or fall 2010 at the earliest.

Jonathan Storm: The execs were all hot and lathered about it, though. Martin Scorsese directing, and unless he comes in with some three-hour monstrosity (which he has been known to do), it should be a go and worth waiting for.

BTW, I just found out what DUMBO stands for from watching an episode of Law & Order: "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass."

Ok, so it won't air until more episodes are produced... Thanks, Arnzilla.

HBO orders 'Boardwalk Empire'
Martin Scorsese directed the period drama's pilot
By Nellie Andreeva

HBO is building a "Boardwalk Empire" with a series order for the Martin Scorsese-directed pilot.

The premium cable network has picked up 11 episodes of the period drama, bringing the total order to 12 hours, including the pilot.

Production on the series is slated to begin this fall for a 2010 premiere.

Written by Terence Winter, "Empire" is set in 1920 at the dawn of Prohibition and chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster.

Scorsese and Winter are executive producing the series with Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Tim Van Patten.

Scorsese is expected to continue to be creatively involved and may direct another episode of "Empire," subject to his availability.

In addition to Buscemi, the cast of the pilot also included Michael Pitt, Kelly MacDonald, Michael Shannon, Stephen Graham, Vincent Piazza, Aleksa Palladino, Paul Sparks, Shea Whigham, Anthony Laciura, Michael Kenneth Williams, Dabney Coleman, Michael Stuhlbarg and Paz de la Huerta.

HBO has been beefing up its slate of original series over the past nine months with orders to new comedies "Hung," "Bored to Death" and "How to Make It in America" and drama "Treme."

Michael Stuhlbarg is playing gangster Arnold Rothstein.

We start shooting the rest of the series in the middle of October.

It won’t be seen until next fall.

It looks like they’re going to try and get it done by December or January. So relatively quickly. Although they spent over two months shooting the pilot. It was like an independent film. I think they’re allowing eight shooting days for each episode.

arnzilla, thanks for all the news.
Stuhlbarg can look so different from one photo to another.

I'm stupid. I thought we would see the series sooner, so I was keeping away from all info to see it fresh... and now it's one more year.

MS: Next is an HBO series called “Boardwalk Empire” which is executive produced and the pilot was directed by Martin Scorsese. It’s co-produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Timothy Van Patten. It’s written by Terence Winter, who wrote for “The Sopranos.” It’s based on the book “Boardwalk Empire” by Nelson Johnson which is about the birth and high times of Atlantic City. We pick up the action on the eve of Prohibition in 1920. I’m playing Arnold Rothstein, who is allegedly responsible for fixing the 1919 World Series. We jump into shooting the second episode at the end of this month, so that’s what I’m up to.
