Scorsese, King talking up 'Silence'
Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro to star

By PATRICK FRATER

Martin Scorsese is determined to make "Silence" his next movie. The helmer and Graham King's GK Films are negotiating with Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro to star. Gael Garcia Bernal is also circling the film, expected to begin production later this year in New Zealand.

The drama is set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.

"Silence" is based on the Shusaku Endo novel, which was adapted by Jay Cocks. Scorsese has had the project on his radar for more than a decade.

The film would be Day-Lewis' third with Scorsese following "Gangs of New York" and "The Age of Innocence." Day-Lewis has completed the Rob Marshall-directed musical "Nine."

"Silence" would mark the first collaboration for Scorsese and Del Toro, who most recently starred in the Steven Soderbergh-directed "Che" and next stars as the title character in "The Wolf Man." Garcia Bernal, best known for "Babel" and "Y tu mama tambien," is in early talks.

There is currently no domestic distributor for the pic. King is financing the film himself, as he did on "Edge of Darkness," the William Monahan-scripted and Martin Campbell-directed drama that stars Mel Gibson.

Scorsese and King have worked together on "The Departed," "The Aviator" and "Gangs of New York."

Scorsese most recently completed an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel "Shutter Island" for Paramount with Leonardo DiCaprio starring.

WOW Shocked Pitch-perfect and beyond dreaming... I almost have tears of joy in my eyes right now. It's obvious they're playing Ferreira, the older priest (Day-Lewis) and Rodrigues (Del Toro), the younger one. If GarcĂa Bernal comes also in he might be there for only a small role (if I remember correctly, Rodrigues was accompanied by another young priest in his trip to Japan).

Actually, I had always thought Bernal would be perfect for Rodrigues. If Day-Lewis plays the older priest then they'd have to age him a bit, because now he and Del Toro look about the same age.

What if it's Bernal as Rodrigues, Del Toro as Garrpe and Day-Lewis as Ferreira?

Also, looking back on this thread... I guess De Niro wasn't talking about Silence after all. Sad

Garpe was the name of the other young priest, right? I can't remember now. Yeah, it could be as you say, Will. GarcĂa Bernal would be wonderful as Rodrigues, but they'll maybe pitch Del Toro for the role given his bigger b.o. potential. Rodrigues is certainly the central role in this story and both actors are among the best you can find (in the Spanish-American world), but I must confess if it's Del Toro I'd be happier (it's the real piece of casting in the news that's really driving me nuts... how could we not have foreseen that???) They'll definitely have to age Day-Lewis for Ferreira in any case. And this indeed doesn't seem like the project De Niro was superstitious about talking.

Gabriel,
yes, Garrpe was one of the two priests making the journey to Japan.
The way I remember it, is that he was the less "delicate" priest, if that is the correct word. He was a bit rougher in manners... And I thought he was a little bit older than Rodrigues.
Not that ages matter so much, though.

I suspect that if Day-Lewis will indeed play Ferreira, then the balance of the three characters will change from novel to script with Ferreira being more prominent.

Ah, ok, Will. I didn't remember those details very well. That was just my guess to distribute the roles that way, but I really fell in love with the idea of Del Toro playing Rodrigues for Scorsese. I think he has the gentleness (and the talent) to convey the fascinating journey of that character. Not that it is very much related in other ways, but his character for Inárritu's 21 Grams, in 2003, was all about a guy going through a tough spiritual crisis, not unlike some other Scorsese protagonists or this Rodrigues.

Oh thank Christ he's finally doing this! I've been waiting for him to tackle this novel ever since I read it six years ago AND THEN found out Scorsese wanted to do it.

And anything that keeps him away from "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" makes me smile!

At long last, it's actually happening.

The cast sounds perfect though my idea of Rodrigues fits Bernal more closely than Del Torro. It would be good if they found a part for all three.

Just a tiny bit from Graham King:
Quote:
King’s slate for 2009 is teeming: he’s hopeful that he and Scorsese will begin shooting on Silence, another long-gestating project about two Jesuit priests who travel to 17th-century Japan; the week of our meeting, the Hollywood trade press have announced that Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael García Bernal are all attached (King denies that any are committed).

I want to follow that project till its end. Thanks for posting news here on the forum. , I will do my best to continue following it.

It's a grand story, great epic story to transpose on screen, great piece of history confronting spiritualities.

Okay, blah blahing... I'm on... Keep news coming.

From an interview with Benicio Del Toro:

Quote:
PLAYBOY: How enthused are you about co-starring with Daniel Day-Lewis in Martin Scorsese's movie version of Silence, Shusaku Endo's novel about two Jesuit priests facing violent resistance when they try to bring Christianity to 17th century Japan?
DEL TORO: Working with Scorsese will be like going to film school. I've met with him about it, and it'll be great.
